Your hair and the elements

Washing, styling and taking care of your hair are all important parts of keeping it looking full of life and gorgeous, but there are some things that affect your hair that are out of your control.

Weather conditions and the environment you live and work in might be ruining your hairstyle, but there are things you can do to combat the effect of the elements on your new haircut or perfectly manicured style.

Even if it isn't raining, humidity in the air can cause water molecules to be suspended between hair follicles, giving you unwanted extra volume and causing frizz and flyaway pieces. To combat the effect of water on your hair, use a good smoothing serum on your hair that'll cause the water to just slide right off the ends. Comb the serum through your hair with a wide toothed comb for full coverage.

Dust particles from the air can attach themselves to your hair, causing it to become dull and heavy. There's an interesting home remedy for removing excess dust between washes - beer! Beer is a great way to strip dirt from hair without removing too many natural oils. Pour a small amount over your hair and massage it into your scalp before rinsing, but be sure to rinse again with moisturising conditioner to remove any hint of the alcohol smell.

The smoke residue from fires or cigarettes doesn't just give your hair a bad smell; it also causes it to become dry and lifeless. To stop smoke from affecting your hair too much, wash hair as soon as possible after being exposed to large volumes of smoke, and apply a leave in mask or moisturiser for 12 hours to reseal hair follicles and leave your hair looking smooth and shiny.
